Prevent Identity Theft

Take These Steps To Prevent Identity Theft

Prevent identity theft at any cost – business executives, CEOs, commercial heads beware. This white-collar crime has gained such notoriety in recent times that you need to be extra vigilant to safeguard personal information, thwart phishing and protect your database from being hacked. Be particularly careful about illegitimate emails posing as genuine ones which try to collect senstive data. Businesses need to protect themselves and also the data their customers entrust to them. To achieve this the security mechanisms employed need to be tightened because the thieves are getting ever smarter. Basic and robust security practices need to be in place to provide physical protection to crucial customer and business data.

Secure Your Premises

Information systems like computer networks should be protected by regular changes of password and other effective policies in order to prevent identity theft. Businesses may need to prevent identity theft from occurring by securing their premises with alarm systems and security locks. A business should ensure that there are deadlocks on their external doors and exposed windows should be secured using film, bars, screens and shatter-proof glass.

Prevent identity theft by physically storing (may be even in paper) or filing all important business records including customer records in locked cabinets instead of in open files that are accessible to anybody and everybody. Lock the cabinets at night and also when no one is around them. In addition, business records should never be put in the trash or recycling bin where they might prove to be a bonanza for any lurking identity thieves. Rather, one should shred these pieces of information. Small and home businesses can purchase cheap shredders while for large volume documents, companies may make use of shredding services. Mail is another favorite of the identity thief and should be carefully handled.

Personal information must be kept private

Identity theft may be kept in check by being careful around personal information that is given to others over the phone. The person on the other side may actually not be whom he says he is. Only after positively confirming the identity of the person on the other end of the phone should personal information be divulged. Also, the computer network should be password protected so that no unauthorized person can gain access to the network. And the password should not be an obvious one such as a name or date of birth. In addition, there is also the need for internal security measures and only those who must have access to information should be allowed it. All others should be excluded.

Redesigning the overall security system across the company might a good idea. This might require a major investment but the security it guarantees in preventing identity theft is more than worth the money spent. Remember, with each passing year the security thieves including hackers will find newer weapons for cracking security systems and computers and stealing sensitive data. Unless adequate steps are taken now, it may become almost impossible to prevent identity theft in the not too distant future.
